Google has just updated a new security feature in the Android system: If the device is locked and does not work within 3 consecutive days, the system will automatically restart without the user intervention. This feature is being implemented through the Google Play Services update version 25.14, released on April 14. It is expected that the update can take about a week to reach the entire Android device compatible.
This move is considered Google “borrowing books” of Apple – the company has introduced the same mechanism called Inactivity Reboot since the end of 2024, in the iOS 18.1 update. With this mechanism, the iPhone will automatically restart after a long time of unused, as an additional measure to protect personal data.

The reason why this feature becomes important is that: a newly restarted device will be safer when falling into the bad guys. Specifically, after each start, the methods of unlocking by biometrics such as fingerprints or face recognition are often disabled temporarily. Instead, the system forces users to enter PIN or password. In addition, in the state of “before the first unlock”, the data on the device will be encrypted stronger, making the information extract almost impossible without decoding.
Although not being promoted, but this is one of the features that are highly appreciated by security experts, especially in the context of more and more people who store sensitive information on their phones.
Not only that, the Google Play Services 25.14 update also offers some other upgrades such as improving system management services to improve stability, along with new features that make the device setup and transfer data from the old phone to the new device easier.
In the smartphone world, the industry still operates under the model “Whoever does it, the other will learn”. Apple has been at the forefront of many features, from face recognition, privacy limit framework to restarting features when not working. And when those features are effective, Google – or any other brand – integrated into its own operating system is only a matter of time.
