Huawei dominated the Chinese folding phone market
According to IDC’s latest quarterly smartphone market monitoring report published on April 23, the Chinese smartphone market in the first quarter of 2025 recorded a clear recovery signal, especially in the folding screen segment. Specifically, the total number of smartphones shipped in the quarter reached 71.6 million units, up 3.3% compared to the same period last year thanks to the resonance impact from the government -subsidy policy and the peak consumption on the Lunar New Year.
In particular, the folding screen segment recorded a great growth with 2.84 million machines shipped, up 53.1% compared to the same period in 2024. This result marked a significant recovery after the fourth quarter/2024, the first time the market witnessed a decline in the past two years.

Huawei continues to assert the absolute leading position in the folding phone market in China. With a diverse product portfolio stretching from horizontal to vertical folding samples, the company accounts for more than 75% of the market share in the first quarter of 2025. The second is Honor with 9.1% market share. The third place belongs to OPPO, thanks to the impression of the product line of thin fold screen Find N5, reaching 7.1% market share.

Xiaomi and Samsung take turns in the next two positions with approximately each other, showing the increasingly fierce competition in this high -end segment. In general, the strong growth of the folding screen in the first quarter shows that the needs of users for this product line are on the recovery momentum, and open up great opportunities for brands to continue expanding the list of folding equipment in the near future.
Dare to sell things that no brand dare to sell
Huawei’s dominance not only comes from market strategy but also from pioneering in product design. The two unique folding phones, Huawei Mate XT and Pura X, have shown this clearly.
Launched in September 2024, Huawei Mate XT is the first smartphone to own a folding design, allowing flexible conversion between three screen modes: 6.4 inches when folded, 7.9 inches when partially opened and 10.2 inches when fully opened. The device has a thickness of only 3.6 mm when opened, much thinner than rivals in the same segment.

HarmonyS 4.2 running device, but does not support Google service, this may affect international user experience.
With Huawei Pura X, this device launched in March 2025, is the first seashell -folding smartphone in the world to own a 16:10 main screen, providing a new user experience for users. When opened, the main screen is 6.3 inches, while the external secondary screen is 3.5 inches. The device is equipped with a rear camera system including 4 lenses: 50MP main camera, 40MP super -wide camera camera, 8MP telephoto camera and 1.5MP depth sensor.

Pura X runs Harmonyos Next, the latest operating system of Huawei, no longer compatible with Android applications. The device also integrates Ai Eye Tracking technology, allows automatic flipping when reading, and supporting 66W fast charging and 40W wireless charging.
At the present time, only Huawei dared to sell unique phones that no other company dared to sell, including Samsung or Oppo. Although this is a new market, Huawei’s boldness is a testament to that the folding smartphone segment is still extremely expensive and so 75% of Huawei’s market share is also understandable.
