Check with CPUID HWMonitor

CPUID HWMonitor is a multi-functional software that allows you to manage laptop status including CPU, power source, temperature… To test laptop battery with this software, do the following:

Step 1: Go to the CPUID HWMonitor download page, then download and install the software on your computer.

Step 2: Open the software and scroll down to the Primary section. Here you pay attention to the parameters Designed capacity (standard battery capacity of the manufacturer) and Current capacity (actual laptop battery capacity).

In addition, the percentage in the Wear Level section will also tell you how much the laptop’s battery is worn out. If this percentage exceeds 50%, you should replace the laptop’s battery to avoid interrupting your work.

Check with Command Prompt

Step 1: Press the Windows + R shortcut key combination to open the Run window. Here you enter the keyword “cmd” and press Enter.

Step 2: The Command Prompt interface will now appear. Here you copy and paste the following command and press Enter:

powercfg /batteryreport

Next, Command Prompt will provide you with a link to the battery-report.html file. This file can usually be found in the C:\User\(Username) folder.

Step 3: Double click to open the file, then go to Installed batteries. Here you check the parameters in the Design capacity (battery capacity from the manufacturer) and Full charge capacity (laptop capacity when fully charged). So you have completed the laptop battery testing steps.

In case the difference between Design capacity and Full charge capacity is more than 10,000mWh, you can replace the laptop battery to optimize the machine’s performance.

Test laptop battery with PowerShell

Step 1: Press Windows + X and click on Windows PowerShell in the list that appears.

Step 2: At the PowerShell interface, enter the following command and press Enter:

powercfg/batteryreport

Step 3: Now you will see a link to a file that provides information about the laptop battery. Access this file and read the parameters as instructed in the section “Check with Command Prompt”.

Tips to help extend laptop battery life

Make sure the room where the laptop is placed is well-ventilated and dry. Do not use the laptop in places with high humidity or temperature.

  • Laptop needs to be placed on a flat surface, can use a cooling pad to increase cooling capacity
  • You should use the correct type of charging cord and charger provided with your laptop.
  • Clean your laptop periodically at least once a year.
  • Do not use your laptop until the battery is completely drained before charging. It is best to proactively plug in the charger when you notice that the laptop battery is about 10 – 20% left.
  • When not using the laptop, turn it off completely and do not leave it on overnight.
